Students As Agents of Change in Corruption Eradication

Corruption Eradication Commission (CEC/KPK) visited Universitas Pattimura on 24 May 2016 to carry out a program of the commission in the form of a public lecture under the topic “ Role of Higher Education Institution in the Prevention and Eradication of Corruption”. The speaker was Mrs. Basaria Panjaitan, a director of the commission. In the context of the theme, Mrs. Panjaitan urged that the students should become the agents of change in corruption eradication efforts and should disseminate the efforts towards the community.

Rector in his speech commented that corruption has become the main problem that must be faced by the Government in many sectors of the National development programs. Corruptions have penetrated deep into the daily activities of the community and have become “the culture in Indonesia”. Therefore, in order to eradicate corruptions in Indonesia, then the role of all parties are needed, one of these parties is the Higher Education Institution such Universitas Pattimura.

The Grand Strategy of the commission is to carry out an integrated prevention, integrated prosecution and prevention which aimed to countermeasures corruption cases. The strategy was evaluated to produce benefits since many government officers have become cautioned in their services, in order to prevent themselves to commit a corruption case.

Students in Universitas Pattimura are urged to become the balancing and controller towards law enforcement agencies and security forces which have authorities in corruption eradication programs. The control should not be used to intervene the underway investigations and hearings of corruption cases, but it should be aimed to propose critics and advice towards the processes of corruption eradication efforts.

In the questions and answers session, the audience proposed an advice that the commission should open a branch office in Maluku. This is to improve the credibility of the commission regarding its functions in corruption eradication programs.
