Selection of New Rector Candidates for 2016 – 2020

Selection process of the new rector candidates of Pattimura University for the term 2016-2020 which was held on 20 January 2016 has resulted in the selection of Prof. Dr. Thomas Pentury, M.Si (current rector), Prof. Dr. M.J. Sapteno, SH, M.Hum (current 2nd Vice Rector – senate member of Law Faculty), and Prof. Dr. Tonny D. Pariela, MA (senate member of Political and Social Sciences Faculty), while the other prospective candidate, Prof. Dr. Ir. Alex S. W. Retraubun, M.Sc (senate member of Fishery and Marine Science Faculty) was not selected because not having enough votes to go through the final selection process.

According to the rules, the selection process had been carried out to select among four prospective candidates in a senate meeting attended by 60 members out of 62 members. The results of the prospective candidates selection process resulted in 21 votes for Prof. Dr. Thomas Pantury, M.Si (first ranking), 16 votes for Prof. Dr. M.J. Sapteno, SH., M.Hum (second ranking), 13 votes for Prof. Dr. Tonny Pariela, MA (third ranking) and 10 votes for Prof. Dr. Ir. Alex Retraubun, M.Sc (fourth ranking). Based on the selection results only three candidates from 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranking were granted rights to compete in the final selection process.

After the prospective selection process was finished, then the three nominated candidates started the competition to get the votes to be the next rector. There are 62 votes of the senate members to be collected from the senate board of Pattimura University, while the Government representative, in this case, the Minister of Research, Technology and Higher Education hold 35% rights in the election process which equals to 33 number of votes.

In the campaign process each candidate is needed to present vision and mission plans for the purpose to be elected as the next rector of Pattimura University for the term 2016-2020.

In general, all of the three candidates focused their vision and mission to maritime development goals, as it is in accordance with the core education vision and mission of the university. The presentation of vision and mission of each candidate was held several hours before the prospective candidates selection was begun. The presentation process was opened to the public which was started on 11:00 to 12:30 EIT (WIT). The presentation session was started by Prof. Dr. Donald Pariela, MA, then Prof. Dr. Thomas Pentury, M.Si, followed by Prof. Dr. Ir. Alex Retraubun, M.Sc and finished with presentation by Prof. Dr. M.J. Sapteno, SH, M.Hum.

In his presentation, Prof. Tonny Donald Pariela, MA elaborated the vision under the theme “ Realization of Qualified and Innovative Tri Dharma (Three Pillars) Management in Higher Education Based on the Special Superiority and Local Potentials”. He explained the vision which planned to direct Unpatti in the future with three objectives. One of the objectives is stressed on the management of Pola Ilmiah Pokok (PIP) – Basic Scientific Plan of Bina Mulia Kelautan (Maritime Noble-Building ) in a consistently manner hence the quality of the institution (Unpatti) could be utilized as a strong bargaining power in the dynamics of competition of science and technology in the regional, national and international stages.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Pentury, M.Si presented the vision and mission for the term 2016-2020 under the theme “Realization of Pattimura University as a Qualified university which has Sea-Island Characters-based, Research-based and Entrepreneurship-based for the development of the Nation”. There are four objectives which were elaborated in the presentation, including realization of Unpatti as a research center with maritime and entrepreneurship developments. The strategic objective is to obtain a qualified Tri Dharma of higher education which is relevant toward national maritime development that based on research, maritime and entrepreneurship developments, improving availability of higher education access, improving internal efficiency and provide accountable management towards the realization of prime services and improving services quality to the campus community.

In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Ir. Alex S. W. Retraubun, M.Sc presented the vision under the theme “Realization of Unpatti as a Competent Archipelago-based University”. Prof. Retraubun wants to improve the competency of the students regarding the archipelago aspects through the implementation of a national archipelago-based standardized education and improve the distribution of research results to the community”. The objective is to produce graduands which are able to compete in the global archipelago-based stage.

The final presenter, Prof. Dr. M.J. Sapteno, SH, M.Hum presented the vision under the theme “Realization of a Qualified and Innovative University with Science and Technology Abilities that Having Competitive Ability with an Archipelago-based Culture”. In the five focuses of the vision, Prof. Sapteno focuses on the quality improvement in the academic/education process, students body activities, and providing qualified human resources. The main strategic objective is to improve academic infrastructures, quality of teaching processes and student activities.

It was planned that the final election of the new rector of Pattimura University for the term 2016-2020 would be held on 29 January 2016.

Inaugural Ceremony for the New Professors

On 18 January 2016, a special senate meeting was held and it was led by the rector of Pattimura university (Unpatti) in the occasion of inauguration ceremony of two new professors in Unpati. These two professors are Prof. Dr. Ir. Johan Riry, MP (Weed Science from Agricultural Faculty) and Prof. Ruslin Hadanu, S.Pd, M.Si (Chemistry education from Teacher Training Faculty).

In his inaugural speech under the title “Weed Management in Supporting Sustainable Food Self-Sufficiency in Small Islands”, Prof. Dr. Ir. Johan Riry, MP stated that he is grateful that after 22 years of work as a lecturer, finally, the Republic of Indonesia Government though the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education has granted him the professorship title in the Agricultural Science especially in Weed Science. He firmly stated in the conclusion of the inaugural speech that weed management is an art in managing weeds hence it would prevent the negatively impacts to human, both in economical and ecological views. Therefore, we have to be wise so we would prevent making erroneous decisions that lead to destruction of island ecosystem. Yanked-out weeds must not be burned but they must be paved with the remained of harvested crops to become organic fertilizers. This will function as a renewable soil nutrients source.

In the same occasion, Prof. Dr. Ruslin Hadanu, S.Pd, M.Si presented the inaugural speech under the topic “Past, Present and Future Role of Carbon Compound and Group in the Pharmaceuticals Industry”. He elaborated that carbon compound group is an important group in Organic Chemistry since, almost all of the process of pharmaceuticals and non-pharmaceuticals synthesis processes are utilizing carbon compound group. These include visual observation processes that involve the reactions of carbon compound group. At the end, it is clear that there are many carbon-based groups in many natural and synthetic compounds that contain carbon.
